Basic information
Center “Srce”, located in Novi Sad, is a voluntary, nongovernmental, non-profitable organization, which that offers suicide prevention and emotional support to people in crisis.
Every day from 2pm to 11pm, volunteers from Center “Srce” talk to people who are lonely, upset, hurt, sad, desperate and – listen to them. They don’t patronize; they take problems seriously; they don't “comfort” people saying that problems will go away and, what is the most important, they don't tell them what to do. They believe that everybody knows what is the best for them, and they believe each person has the right to decide about his/her life, even if the decision is to finish it.
All information we get from our callers is strictly confidential and stays within the Center. People who get in touch with us can stay anonymous. Services of the Center are offered free of charge.
Values
Our values are based on these beliefs:
- It is important to have the opportunity to explore difficult feelings;
- Human contact, undivided attention and empathy meets a fundamental emotional need and reduces distress and despair.
- Being listened to in confidentiality and accepted without prejudice, can alleviate despair and suicidal feelings;
- Everyone has the right to make fundamental decisions about his/her own life, including the decision to finish it by committing a suicide.
Mission and vision
Mission of the Center is to offer emotional support to people in crisis and suicide prevention by telephone, e-mail and chat. We think we can alleviate suffering a person is feeling and reduce the intensity of suicidal feelings. It is our wish to extend working hours to 24 h and to offer emotional support "face to face" in order to be more available to people who need our help.
We have the vision of society in which:
Fewer people commit suicide;
People are able to explore their own feelings;
People are able to acknowledge and respect feelings of others.
